WHEN DO YOU NEED AN OWNER BUILDER PERMIT?

If you are planning to do residential building work where the reasonable market cost of the work (labour and materials) totals more than $5,000.00, and you are not engaging a licenced builder to do the work, you need an owner builder permit. To obtain an owner builder permit from NSW Fair Trading, one of the requirements is that you successfully complete the owner builder course. ARE THERE ANY PRE-REQUISITES FOR THE OWNER BUILDER PERMIT?

Yes, you must complete the NSW White Card Course (Construction Induction Course) before you can enrol in the owner-builder course. If you Google "White Card Course Online" you will find numerous training organisations that offer the course for as little as $35.00. After you have successfully completed the White Card Course, the training company normally emails a certificate to you on the same day that you have completed the course. We only need the email of the certificate to accept your enrolment. Unfortunately, at this stage, Live and Learn Pty Ltd is too busy too offer this course. WHAT ARE THE METHODS OF DELIVERY OF THE OWNER BUILDER COURSE?

There are two ways you can complete the owner builder course:

1. Owner builder course by distance learning – the course cost is $88.00. With this method, you email leo@liveandlearn.com.au for an enrolment form. After the enrolment form is processed all the learner material and assessment will be emailed to you. The course is thorough and equips you with the knowledge to confidently complete your project. Live and Learn has designed the course to be as lean as possible without compromising what you need to know about the owner builder process – after all, you are about to embark on potentially one of the biggest investments in your life and you owe it to yourself to complete what we believe is the best value for money owner-builder course on the market.

2. Owner builder course by face to face learning – the course cost is $290.00. With this method, you email leo@liveandlearn.com.au for an enrolment form and one of our staff will be in contact with you to discuss a day and time that is suitable to you to complete the training. The course normally takes about six hours to complete – at the end of the course you receive your certificate if you successfully complete the assessment. With this method of delivery you also receive tips and tricks from an experienced builder (who has also worked as a construction lawyer) on: negotiating contracts; saving money;how to make sure your budget doesn’t blow out, that can potentially save you thousands of dollars. There is no doubt that you will learn much more with the face to face method of training compared to the distance learning method of training so anyone who is undertaking a new build or a major renovation should seriously consider this method of training as it will undoubtedly save you money and make you aware of the major pitfalls of construction.
